A 10th-century Norwegian Viking sword represents a remarkable fusion of functional warfare technology and Norse artistry. During this era, swords were not only weapons but also symbols of status, wealth, and honor.

Societal Role

  • Swords were expensive to make and thus typically owned by wealthy warriors, jarls (chieftains), or kings.

  • A Viking’s sword was often buried with him, signifying its importance in both life and the afterlife.

  • The possession of a finely made sword indicated status, bravery, and loyalty.

This Norwegian Viking Sword has a blade of tempered high carbon steel with etched design on both sides. The guard and pommel are brass which is embellished with braided steel wire that is knotted as a latticework over and through the guard and pommel. The grip is wood with a leather wrap.

Included is a wooden scabbard which is wrapped in leather and completed with antiqued brass fittings.
