The Coolus type helmets were used by Roman legionaries and cavalry during the late Roman Republic (circa 3rd–1st century BCE). Named after a find in Coolus, France, these helmets were typically made from bronze or brass and show influence from earlier Celtic and Etruscan designs.
The Coolus "E" variant is a specific subtype found at archaeological sites like Schaan, Switzerland, and features a simple, rounded bowl and a minimalistic design, typical of transitional helmets used just before the adoption of the more complex Imperial Gallic helmets.
This Roman Coolus E Helmet is made from brass and has hinged cheekplates and an included leather cord to fasten them around the chin. Plume holders are mounted on the side and top of the helmet.
The interior of the helmet is unlined – included is a separate padded cotton arming cap.
