The Sword of St Maurice (Vienna) 13th C. (based on XI model)
The XI type sword can be seen in the Weltliches Schatzkammer museum in Vienna and has the inventory number SchK XIII 17. The cross style is 1, long and slender. The sword is dated c.1050-1120. The sword was the Coronation Sword of the Holy Roman Empire.
The cross and pommel is engraved: arms upon the pommel and religious invocations on the cross. One side of the pommel are the Arms of the Empire, on the other side is the personal arms of Otto IV (1198-1218), a demi-eagle impaling three leopards.
The inscription on the pommel is “BENEDICTVS . Do(minv)S . DE(v)S . QVI . DOCET . MANV(s)+” meaning [Be] Praised [my] Lord [and] God, who teaches [my] hands [to fight]

On one side of the cross are the words in Gothic minuscules, “CHRISTVS . VINCIT . CHRISTUS . REINAT . CHRIST’(vs) INPERAT”. This means Christus triumphs – Chrisus reigns – Christus Rules.

These words were used as the Antiphon to the Coronation anthem “Laudes Regine” as well as a war-cry used in the Third Crusade.
